This interview is going to take a giant step toward developing
positive habits, with the help of Dan Robey. Dan is the author of
The Power of Positive Habits.
AudioMotivation:
Now how to we go about acquiring these new positive habits?
Dan Robey:
Well, what research has found is that it only takes 21 days for you to repeat an action before it is very likely that it is going to become a new habit in your life so what we want to do is start gaining knowledge that can be converted into an action for only 21 days.
We are talking about three weeks out of somebody's life. So, what I tell people is to start gaining knowledge that can be "actionized" and that is the term that I coined in the book.
I looked at the dictionary and there really is no word "actionized". But what I'm really saying to people is we have all heard before that knowledge is power, so I am saying to you is you "actionize" knowledge for 21 days, which is only three weeks, which means repeat the action for 21 days only.
What you're going to do is create a new habit in your life which is permanent and automatic, and when you think about it since habits are permanent and automatic it is the best tool you can possibly have because you are really putting yourself on autopilot and that is what my book is all about.
You can put your mind and your body on autopilot in only 21 days and start reaching your goal automatically. The way you are going to do that is you're going to repeat actions and those actions are going to become new and automatic permanent habits.
AudioMotivation:
Now this all sounds great Dan but nothing comes easy and it must not be easy acquiring new positive habits.
Dan Robey:
Well, it's actually easy to acquire new habits, because in fact we are really doing it all of the time. Most people are not aware of the fact that they are doing it, but I will give you a perfect example. When most people go out of town they rent a car. So when you get into the car, the first thing you do is try and find where the ignition switch is, where is the radio dial, where
is the window button, how do you put the windows up and down.
So what you're doing is you are familiarizing yourself with the car
that you will be driving for the weekend so as you drive around you
are acquiring new driving habits.
If you had bought a car instead of renting it would only be a
matter of a few weeks before you would have completely acquired new
driving habits with your new car. It is the same thing with buying
habits; people have a certain brand of gum that they like, maybe we
like a certain kind of dessert.
You go to the store and get used to buying it all the time and notice that you always have that on your shelf, it becomes a buying habit. And that is how easy it is to create new habits in your life.
Now knowing that it is that easy to do what we want to do is start
arming ourselves with information. So when I started writing the
book, my big challenge was I had to go and do all of the research
and study all the medical journals, the publications, talk to the
PhD's and doctors and the motivation people, the Tony Robbinses,
the Zig Ziglars and find out what all these people did that made
them successful, find out what the new medical studies are that
showed that if you do X, Y, Z and it becomes a habit then it will
lower your cholesterol automatically, give you a healthier heart
automatically, make you a positive thinker automatically, make you
more successful automatically.
So, my challenge was to go out and spend a year and a half almost 2
years doing the research and talking with all the top experts and
then consolidating all the information down into a series of dozens
and dozens of habits which we are going to be talking about.
This is the knowledge that you need so you can say OK now I know that
this knowledge says if I do X, Y, Z I am going to have a healthier
heart, I am going to reduce my risk of getting cancer, I'm going
to lose weight automatically, whatever it might be.
So that is basically what I'm trying to do. I am trying to give
people the knowledge that they need so they can "actionize" new
knowledge into habits and then put themselves on autopilot.
